Scope and Content
The ‘New Media’ subseries is arranged to provide access to new media works produced between 2024 and 2025. This subseries consists of a total of two items. It includes Psyche, which shares the same source but generates subtle variations in playback depending on differences in device-specific physical conditions and processing speeds, and Jeongisu (The Storyteller), which outputs different ambient soundscapes in response to sensor reactions to external environmental conditions.

  • Psyche
‘Psyche’ is a work produced in 2023. It was first exhibited at ‘Contacting presence’, held from December 27, 2023, to January 6, 2024, at Space Cadalogs. Inspired by the myth of Eros and Psyche, the work consists of two smartphones playing videos of tropical fish. While the videos on both devices share the same source, subtle discrepancies arise during playback due to differences in physical conditions and processing speeds, causing the two videos to gradually drift apart. The original one-minute video was divided into frames (1/24 of a second), resulting in 3,600 files played sequentially via Windows Media Player. This process was re-recorded, and despite being performed on the same computer, the limitations of processing speed expanded the footage into videos exceeding five and six minutes, respectively. These expanded videos were then compressed back to the original one-minute duration for playback.
  • Jeongisu(The Storyteller)
‘Jeongisu(The Storyteller)’ is a work produced in 2024. It was first exhibited at ‘Rheem, Daul’, held from August 23 to September 22, 2024, at sangheeut. When a gyro sensor, shaped like a wind bell, moves in the wind, the device measures the sensor's positional values using trigonometric functions and outputs wind bell sounds of varying intensities. In the first part of the exhibition, it played wind bell sounds, and in the second part, it was changed to thunder sounds.
